Let the Lower Lights Be Burning, Part 3

Let the Lower Lights Be Burning, Part 3

Generosity is a quality that is not achieved by accident; it requires the desire to put others first, the humility to seek no praise, and the strength to give away what could be personally enjoyed. Whether it is money or time, generous people give freely and seek nothing in return.

A recent situation provided an opportunity for generosity. Due to the untimely death of a family member, a fellow-Christian was placed in a difficult situation not only from the passing, but also with taking care of all the details associated with the death of a loved one. When Christians of this congregation heard that extra financial support would help the situation, money readily flowed in. Within the span of less than two weeks, over $5,000 was collected, with many of those who contributed expressing thanks for the opportunity to give. These lower lights reflect the generosity of their Father in Heaven.

Wealth can often have a negative impact; thus, God gives serious warnings. The apostle Paul wrote, “As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life” (I Timothy 6:17-19). Riches can lead to a false peace of mind, just as was displayed by the rich farmer in the Lord’s parable: “And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry” (Luke 12:19). Godly generosity evaluates these dangers and counters them by a willingness to glorify God by giving to others.

During the eleven-year association I have had with the Gooch Lane church, several occasions have arisen both to help those in need as well as to contribute to worthy projects in spreading the kingdom. On each of these occasions, I have been overwhelmed with the quiet generosity displayed by this group. This spirit indicates people who seek no personal glory, but simply seek opportunities to lay up treasures in Heaven. May God bless and increase these selfless lower lights.
