In a world characterized by constant mental stimulation and pleasure seeking, we must slow down and relinquish control.
The point of Ecclesiastes is to help the reader remember what is truly important. It is not the education, the job, the European vacation, or the house with the white picket fence; it is one’s standing with God.
I come back to this passage often in my walk with God. If things are too confusing, I lose my way, or I need some encouragement, I find it here.
We have deep needs for love, for comfort, and certainly for our sins to be forgiven. We have comfort in Christ because He reveals the fullness of God’s grace.
So, what do you think? Does the word holy describe you and me? It certainly described Christians in the New Testament who were headed for heaven.
: True humility replaces self-seeking with seeking first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33), self-will with doing the will of God (Matthew 7:21), self reliance with reliance upon God (2 Corinthians 3:5), self-confidence with confidence in God (2 Timothy 1:12), and self-exaltation with exaltation by God (1 Corinthians 4:3-6).
Every generation needs to hear teaching on the current dangers they face. While peers can be helpful in this, it is the responsibility of older Christians to take the lead in training young minds.
But looking back now, I realize that in waiting for my wife, even though at the time it seemed to take longer than I wanted, I would not change the timing of it now. In all of the waiting, I discovered just how much of a good thing I found.
Perhaps there is no more important truth to be recognized about the beatitudes than the fact that they are not independent proverbs which apply to eight different groups of men, but are a composite description of every citizen in the kingdom of God.
