All in Resilience
Though it is a day just like the other 364, the first day of the year is a time of both optimism and planning; it is a time that leads most to think about what the future may hold. This is an especially important exercise for children of God.
A few years back, a rather non-subtle bumper sticker stated, “If you can read this, thank a teacher.” This pithy statement was a reminder that many of the skills we take for granted are owed to someone taking the time to help. This is certainly the case when it comes to our biblical training.
The Corinthian church faced many different challenges presently and in the future, as all churches do. Whether it be from conflicts and disagreements within the church, the ensnaring nature of sin, or the threat of persecution, the church is and will be threatened by a variety of attacks that threaten to upend its walk with God. In the face of such troubles, Paul exhorted the Corinthians to do these five things.
COVID-19, quarantine, and civil unrest have tested Christians in ways unimagined. Though these things seemed unfathomable in the beginning days of the year, they have provided real-time tests to evaluate personal resiliency.
The Bible is filled with bounce back stories. These and many other Bible characters had foibles, weaknesses, and failures; however, they chose to get back up when life threw them a punch.
Simply put, God is in control! At times this may be difficult to see; however, His faithful know that how things appear on the surface does not bespeak spiritual reality. Eternally speaking, right will reign victorious because God is its Champion.
We have had those troubles, various and difficult, that leave us lying awake at night. When we try to think, it only makes us moan. When we try to put it to words, we fail. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ felt similarly when he cried out on the cross, “My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me?”
Faith is sometimes sold in a style similar to “made for tv” products. The sales pitch is spectacular, the results seem wonderful, and the journey appears to be easy.
