“DAY BY DAY”
By Harris Waterman
“Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart” (Acts 2:46).
Have you ever read Acts 2:42-47 and thought, “Wow! How awesome would it have been to be a part of that church? They are so on fire for the Lord; so enthusiastic, so excited!” Too many times I think we let the routines of our lives hinder us from being as excited about worship as we could be. Some weeks, church can get lumped into the category of PTA meetings, Booster Clubs, Footballs games, and everything else we have on our list of things to do in the evening before we can sit down and relax before bed.
Is this how we should view church? The obvious answer is: NO! And we would probably all agree with that; but the fact is, it happens. That’s just how it is sometimes.
This week, however, we have the privilege of getting a taste of what the first church had! Today, Brother Don Truex is joining us from Temple Terrace, Florida to preach on the theme, “Saved to Serve;” and with his arrival we are beginning our week long gospel meeting. For the next 6 days we have the opportunity to “day by day continue with one mind” in the assembly. Let’s get excited about the chance to meet in the house of the Lord for the next 6 days with each other; building one another up, encouraging one another, singing praises to God, and learning from Bro. Truex. Use this opportunity as a time to renew your spirit, to build your faith, to seek God, and to spread His word!
As a special challenge this week, if you can spare a little extra time the next few evenings, try to “take meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart”. There is something special about coming together as family and sitting around the dinner table. Use this week to not only draw closer to God, but to draw closer to one another and build your relationships with this family.
When we imitate that first church, we will also feel the spiritual excitement they felt! I hope this week will be beneficial for you, and you will grow closer to God and to each other. I look forward to seeing you there!
“I was glad when they said to me, `Let us go to the house of the LORD’” (Psa 122:1).
